Membrane Breaks Through Performance Barrier
Engineers have developed a new method for creating high-performance membranes from crystal sieves called zeolites; the method could increase the energy efficiency of chemical separations up to 50 times over conventional methods and enable higher production rates.

Researchers led by chemical engineer Michael Tsapatsis of the University of Minnesota reported this discovery in the July 31, 2009, issue of Science.

Nanoparticles Explored for Preventing Cell Damage
Sudipta Seal is enthralled by nanoparticles, particularly those of a rare earth metal called cerium.  The particles are showing potential for a wide range of applications, from medicine to energy.

Several years ago, he and his colleagues engineered nanoparticles of cerium oxide (CeO2), a material long used in ceramics, catalysts, and fuel cells.  Since then, the researchers found that cerium oxide nanoparticles have two additional medical benefits: they behave like an antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative stress, and they can be fine-tuned to potentially deliver medical treatments directly into cells.

CNA Continues Seminar Series
The Center for Nanostructure Applications (CNA) Seminar Series will be continuing in Fall 2009.  All seminars will take place on Mondays in Walter Library, Room 402 at the University of Minnesota. Seminars begin with refreshments at 3:45pm and the talk is from 4-5pm, unless otherwise noted.

Nanotechnology Discussion Lists
The National Nanotechnology Infrastructure Network has a number of open discussion lists for technology exchange for both users and non-users.  These include lists for computation, biology, fabrication, and materials.  Sign ups are accessible from the 'Contacts' page on the NNIN web site: www.nnin.org/nnin_contact.taf
